Caos – The inauguration and the results of the competition

Between giraffes, sailors, cannons and a lot of chaos, Saturday, December 8 we spent a great day dedicated to illustrators. At 3.50pm we were still trying to clean up our gallery because at 16 it opened “More”, the personal exhibition of Victoria Semykina (winner of the past edition of the illustration competition), presented by Anna Castagnoli. At 5 pm we moved to Santa Maria della Pietà for the opening of the exhibition Caos with the special section dedicated to Mordillo, “The tenderness of fear”. The Argentine artist has honored our city dedicating an illustration, one of his famous giraffe is measured in height with the “Torrazzo” of Cremona. At a certain point, a fearsome cannon, inspired by an illustration by Mordillo, was staged. That cannon had the goal of creating chaos in the hall to nominate the winners of the 14th edition of the Tapirulan illustrator contest: the Popular Prize was won by the couple Gianluca Patti and Bianca Sangalli Moretti, while the Critics Prize is finished in the hands of Joey Guidone . The 12 authors published on the 2019 calendar are: Emanuele Benetti, Inna Burshteyn, Giulia Canala, Beatrice Cerocchi, James Daw, Luca Di Battista, Joey Guidone, Irene and Irene, Marie Muravski, Filippo Spinelli, Laura Zani, Antonio Zeoli. Sunday 9 December at 11 am another appointment: an interview with Guillermo Mordillo who told his incredible career. The competition ends in this way, but the exhibition will remain open until February 3, 2019 in Cremona and then move to Genoa Nervi between March and June 2019. And there, as usual, we will make an appointment for the new edition!

Caos – Selected authors

Many people have written to us, eager to know the results, and we apologize for making you wait one more day to know the results of the competition, but the choices when they are suffering and intense require time and meditation, so it was for the jury of this year, that we thank for the patience and dedication. Below are the 48 authors selected in the group of 975 participants. All 48 selected authors will be exhibited in Cremona between 8 December 2018 and 3 February 2019 (and subsequently in Genova Nervi until June 2019), together with the anthology section dedicated to Mordillo, special guest of this XIV edition. Among the 48 selected will be chosen the 12 authors published on the calendar and the winner of the first prize of 2500 euros, which will be awarded the same day during an award ceremony that probably will be very chaotic. The People’s Prize (500 euros) will also be awarded to one of these authors at the end of online voting.

Voting will start on Monday, November 26, 2018 at midday and will close on Friday, November 30, 2018 at midnight. Only selected authors can be voted. Once again we thank all the participants and we invite you to the inauguration of the exhibition on December 8th: at 4pm at our gallery (corso XX Settembre 22, Cremona) will be inaugurated the exhibition of Victoria Semykina (winner of the last edition), then at 17 to Santa Maria della Pietà will take place the award ceremony and the inauguration of Chaos with the presence of Mordillo. Sunday, December 9 at 11 will take place – always in Santa Maria della Pietà – a more intimate meeting, with Guillermo Mordillo and all the illustrators.

Caos – Gallery of all the contestants

Dear friends, after unutterable efforts our brave cataloguers have completed their work and the gallery of all the participants to the 14th edition of our illustration contest is finally done! So brace yourselves and get ready to dig into a long and chaotic tunnel of images because this year there are more contestants than ever: 975 artists from about every corner of the world.

The chaos of cataloging

Surely the most chaotic moment of the competition is that of cataloging. Saturday, October 20th, the registrations for the fourteenth edition of the competition were closed and in these days we are opening packages, checking entries, digitizing illustrations … In short, a long work awaits us that will end when – around November 10th – all the illustrations will be put online. Meanwhile, the jury will also work to express its verdict that will arrive on November 20. We thank all the participants right away, this year more numerous than ever: a sign of affection, after so many editions, that makes us enormously pleased; and we launch the invitation for December 8 for the opening of the exhibition of the selected authors – CAOS -, and the opening of Victoria Semykina show (winner of the last edition), and the opening of the exhibition of Mordillo, the special guest of this year.

14th edition at the start, it is already chaos …

For someone it represents the origin of all things, for others it is only the state in which they find their own desk; for someone it is a mathematical and physical theory that can understand only those who have an incredibly high IQ, for others it represents the emblem of the society in which we live. We are talking about the CAOS, or CHAOS if you prefer. But we are also talking about the theme of the 14th edition of the Tapirulan illustrator contest.

If at this moment your mind appears totally empty and you have any idea of what you could draw to participate in the competition, well … don’t worry, this is Chaos too, in a certain sense: that is a primordial state of emptiness, a (creative) darkness that precedes the realization of a magnificent illustration. The important thing, however, is that the darkness vanishes within October 20, 2018, that is the deadline of the competition. Given the theme we could also leave maximum freedom of delivery, but in the organization of Tapirulan perhaps it is better that the chaos still does not reign… So even in this edition it is necessary to draw up a regulation, that you can find it here.

The jury – presided this year by Guillermo Mordillo – will decree the winner of the first prize of € 2,500. And always the jury will choose the 48 authors to exhibit in Cremona and Genoa, starting from 8 December 2018. Now we can only rely on your strong sense of disorder, and as Karl Kraus said: “Wellcome to chaos, for order didn’t work”.

Goodbye to the Master Tony Wolf

Dear friends, this time we are writing you to communicate a sad news. Antonio Lupatelli, known to all as Tony Wolf, passed away on Friday 18 May. We are really sorry because besides being a great illustrator he was a special person. Many of you have had the opportunity to meet during the exhibition CIAO and know how humble and reserved, and how much each of his gestures was of an immense sweetness. Our association owes a lot to Tony Wolf because he is the first to believe in our project more than ten years ago. We would like to remind him with the delicate smile of this photograph, we remember him as a good and affable man who looks with satisfaction at the work of a whole life spent with a pencil in his hand. And we hope that his person has entered your hearts as strongly as he has entered into ours.

Christmas drink with Tony Wolf

Natale Tony Wolf

Christmas is approaching and with it the flourishing of aperitifs, business dinners, greetings among colleagues, exchanges of gifts among friends, etc. etc. … Yes, but a Christmas aperitif in the middle of 250 illustrations is not so frequent. Saturday, December 23 in Santa Maria della Pietà (Cremona) we will toast together in the exhibition “Ciao”. At 5 pm there will be a guided tour with an exceptional guest – Tony Wolf – at the end of which we will face the first Christmas calories provided by panettone, pandoro and wine. And those who run out of ideas for gifts can also take advantage of the well-stocked exhibition bookshop!

Ciao – The opening and the results of the competition

Saturday, December 2, you really came in many. Thank you! It was a wonderful party in honor of the selected authors and a tribute of affection for Antonio Lupatelli, aka Tony Wolf, who presided over the jury and is the protagonist of his first solo exhibition. The day began at 4 pm when Guido Scarabottolo presented the exhibition “Disorder” by Giulia Pastorino at Spazio Tapirulan. Then the long-awaited moment of the award ceremony arrived. The Critics Prize of the 13th edition of the Tapirulan competition was awarded to the Russian illustrator Victoria Semykina. The Popular Prize was awarded to Davide Bonazzi, who became the first author to win both prizes in the competition, having already won the Critics’ Prize in 2013. On the 2018 calendar will appear illustrations of: Davide Bonazzi, Andrea De Luca, Marco De Masi, Laurent Ferrante, Francesco Guarnaccia, Alice Piaggio, Natascha Rosenberg, Giovanni Scarduelli, Jacopo Schiavo, Victoria Semykina, Marco Spadari, João Vaz de Carvalho. The day after we still had the pleasure of meeting Tony Wolf who told us about his career. The day ended with the presentation of the “Manuale dell’illustratore” by Anna Castagnoli. The exhibition will remain open until January 28, 2018 in Cremona, then will move to Genova Nervi from March to June 2018. We thank again all the many participants, both in the competition and at the inauguration, and all the partners who supported the initiative. Hello, next year!

Ciao ciao…

The gestation of the 13th edition of Tapirulan’s illustration contest has been long, but finally we’re ready. We have a brand new website which we hope is clearer and will provide all the informations you need. We also have a brand new jury headed by someone we are particularly attached to because he has been around since Tapirulan’s birth. We’re talking about Tony Wolf and we are proud and honoured to organize the exhibition of his works which will be shown alongside that of the competition. So: Ciao! We’re saying hello and telling you the theme of the competition at the same time! Ciao is a friendly and informal greeting, used mostly in it’s native Italy, but also very common almost all over the world, mainly thanks to the many Italian emigrants who’ve taken it with them. You meet with a ciao, you introduce yourself with a ciao, you say goodbye with a ciao… How? Where? Who with? Why? We’ll leave the answers to all these questions to the fervid imaginations of our illustrators. Entries will be accepted up until 25 October 2017. Send us your greeting in a square format, either paper or pixel: here you can find details of the rules. When the competion closes the jury will choose 12 illustrators for the annual Tapirulan calendar, the winner of the 2.000 euro prize and the 48 illustrators whose work will be shown in the international contemporary illustration exhibition (from December to January in Cremona and from March to June in Genova-Nervi). Ciao!

Tony Wolf, special guest 2017

The special guest of this thirteenth edition of the competition will be Tony Wolf, one of the most loved children’s authors all over the world. His books are in the libraries of almost all families, but few know that behind that name is hiding a peaceful and reserved Italian illustrator … The true name of Tony Wolf is Antonio Lupatelli. Born in 1930, he began his career working with Pagotto brothers (Pagot Film), later with the British publisher Fleetway. When he come back in Italy, he started collaborating with the Corriere dei Piccoli, then with Fratelli Fabbri Editore and finally with Dami Editore. Lupatelli also had a long collaboration with the publisher The Scarabeo of Turin: he has realized many tarot including “The targots of the gnomes”, famous for being the smallest tarot deck ever published.
