Federico Maggioni (Campo Ossuccio, Como, 5 September 1944) is an Italian illustrator and graphic designer. He spent his childhood and early adolescence in Rome, before moving with his family to Milan where he still lives and works. During his university years, he enrolled in the Faculty of Economics at the Catholic University of Milan, developed a strong interest in drawing and, after his military service, in 1969, was hired by Domenica del Corriere, where he gained his first experiences in graphics and illustration. After a brief period at Corriere dei Piccoli, in 1972 he joined the editorial staff of the new periodical Corriere dei Ragazzi, where, by now a professional journalist, he became head of the graphics department two years later. In 1975, under the direction of Alfredo Barberis, he took part in the project for the new Corriere dei Piccoli, of which he became art director, before collaborating, in the second half of the 1970s, with the Vallecchi publishing house, studying the graphic restyling. In 1979 he was commissioned by the publisher Raffaele Crovi to create the covers for the Rusconi publishing house. In 1980 he published his first book, Là nel selvaggio West, created together with Tiziano Sclavi. Many others followed, published by the major Italian publishing houses (Rizzoli, Mondadori, Einaudi, Feltrinelli, Salani, Zanichelli, Elle, Editori Riuniti, Bruno Mondadori, Fatatrac, La coccinella, Elemond) and written by authors such as Renato Queirolo, Donatella Ziliotto, Francesca Lazzarato, Roberto Denti, Roberto Piumini, Giusi Quarenghi, Ennio Cavalli and Antonio Steffenoni. In the same period, the magazine Grazia began to host his illustrations as a commentary on the weekly stories. From this moment on, his drawings appeared in magazines such as Corriere della sera, Epoca, Amica, Brava, Salve, Internazionale and Abitare. In 1981 he became the graphic designer for the Bompiani-Sonzogno-Fabbri publishing group and in 1984 he designed the Italian edition of Pilot magazine for Bonelli Editore, together with Tiziano Sclavi, for which he was art director. He later collaborated as an editorial graphic designer and concept designer with companies such as Ipsoa, Sole 24 ore and Mythos Arkè. He designed and created the weekly insert for children’s magazine Il Giorno. In 2000 he began collaborating with the Corraini publishing house in Mantua for which he created numerous books such as Cuore by Edmondo De Amicis, Il regole del giuoco del calcio and Rosa Vercesi, a play by Guido Ceronetti. In 2006 he published I promessi sposi with drawings by Federico Maggioni for the Piemme publishing house and in the same year he illustrated the new edition of Il Cavaliere inesistente by Italo Calvino. The following year he began collaborating with the Longanesi publishing house for which he created numerous covers for the Le spade series. In 2008 he created the illustrations for the volume dedicated to Giulio Cesare Croce L’arguto bolognese, written by Elisabetta Lodoli and published by Bup. In 2009 the publishing house BD republished Là nel selvaggio West and the following year, again for BD, he created the illustrations for Mostri by Tiziano Sclavi. He collaborates with the magazine Liber and is the editor-in-chief of Un sedicesimo, published by Corraini. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Italy and Europe. His solo exhibitions have been organized in Milan, Pavia, Pontremoli, Mantua, Bologna and Lecco. He has organized workshops for adults and children in various editions of the Festivaletteratura in Mantua (for which he created the poster in 2010) and in the 2007/2008 school year he held an illustration course at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, he illustrated, for the Corriere della sera, some of the 45 episodes of Visioni d’Italia (for which he created the logo), a series of articles written by Gian Antonio Stella and Sergio Rizzo aimed at reinterpreting salient moments and places of the Risorgimento published every Saturday in the Milanese newspaper from February to December 2010. Also on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy, he edited, for BD editions, the volume Tracce di Garibaldi (2011). On March 11, 2012, the first episode of a graphic novel linked to dreams (and Freud) was published in Lettura, the Sunday cultural insert of the Corriere della sera.
