Duality

Opera di James Robertson

Technique:

Graphite pencil and gold leaf

Description

The sometimes dual-meaning of the term ‘ciao’ is the basis of my interpretation. I thought about how – as with the gesture of a wave – the word can be used to greet someone as they arrive, or to bid them farewell as they depart.
It is not only people which arrive in or depart from our lives; we interact with objects every day – some of which even depict people. Playing cards, for example, show their faces as they arrive in our hand then leave.
Clearly, it is in human nature to apply our visage to things, even concepts such as life and death. They are often angelic in nature but humanoid in form. Two sides of the same conceptual coin.
