In Gone with the Wind (1939), Rhett abandons Scarlett at the door into to Ashley’s party; ‘You go into the arena alone, the lions are hungry for you.’ In she walks, wearing a memorable red dress and plenty of rouge, and everything becomes silent. We see her facial expression harden as she stands before a roomful of people who no longer like her.
