The EU may have been unprepared for the corona crisis, but the handling of the refugees is exactly according to plan. The very cornerstone of the EU’s refugee policy is to keep asylum seekers out of the EU. All asylum seekers who want to stay in the EU must apply for a stay in the first EU country they come to, and often it is Greece or Italy. Despite the fact that these countries have many other major challenges, they remain with the main responsibility for the refugee crisis.
