Former Self

Cutting your hair can be a very symbolic experience of moving on and stepping into a new life experience. My idea for this piece is saying ciao to a former self and hello to new experiences. Change can be difficult, so I didn’t want this to be overly happy; but it is hopeful for a new beginning and not filled with complete sadness. Working with bright, contrasting colors eludes to the unknown excitement of the future. The organic flow of hair incorporates the “former selves” being cut off as well as the flowing words.

I started by sketching my designs in pencil and them inking them by hand. I then scan the images in and vectorize them via Illustrator and paint them via Photoshop so that the colors are extremely vivid.
